A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

Unfortunately, this game is not currently in development.
As for why, I'll try to explain in this blog post.

The game is an untitled RPG inspired by the classic Paper Mario games. It’s got turn-based combat with quick time events and a detailed overworld to explore. The demo is about 1 to 2 hours of the beginning of the game.

Controls:
Movement - Arrow Keys, Left Stick
Interact / Confirm - Z Key, A Button
Whack / Cancel - X Key, B Button
Item Ability - C Key, X Button
Menu - Spacebar, Start Button

Credits:
This demo was mostly made by me, but some art and characters were made by:
Dawn B.
Andrew W.
Max H.
(thank you friends 🙏)

Most of the music was made by Mark Sparling, who let me use his Daily Songs to fill in the audio gaps in this demo. Thanks Mark! There’s still a track or two in there that I made myself, but they’re not the good ones!

Super cool demo, thanks for releasing it.  I really enjoyed the charm of it and admittedly I reloaded a few times when some of my partners bit it so I was invested!

It would have been cool to see what this was like fleshed out, things like switching between the umbrella and the lantern when going through the caves got a little tedious (why did I feel so compelled to get that floppy disk lol)   but I understand that some things aren't meant to be.

Between this and A Short Hike you have a fan in me.  Thanks for the hotdog, excited to see whatever you do next!

I wish you all the luck in continuing to make what inspires you. Whim and whimsy is underrated, especially in games.  We don't want you burning out and having to start a bar like a dot com boomer (unless, uh, that's really what you want to do...)!

Anyway over here we just happen to love what you do (Mayor Bones has become an October tradition). Looking forward to fiddling with this.

Loved the whole demo, it kept me hooked throughout the whole game. Visuals attracted, gameplay hooked! I loved being able to see into your process, the way you build up levels, with the unfinished town section after the golem battle

thanks for playing!! :)

Hi there Adam!

it was just as you said, your email came to me by complete surprise! nevertheless, i want you to know that i was very much looking forward to it, and will definitely play the demo to EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! "a short hike" is to this day my favourite game, i used to go back to it just to fly around in it, because that alone was pure joy to do!! I was very emotional as well playing a short hike, I recommended it to all my friends and they all loved it to bits as well!

i will come back once i get the chance to play this demo!

I dont want you to feel pressured about continueing development for this game because of this comment, even tho i would be THRILLED of course.

In the end, we all have our battles to fight! and you coming to this decision could not have been easy for you! I just hope you know that you are amazing and can do amazing things, and if you just need to start anew, please take all your time to do it! we would be absolutely lucky to get more games from you, but you yourself will always come first, that much is for sure! No matter what, we are rooting for you cx

Hi Adam,

I'm one of the people who signed up for this game's newsletter a long time ago, and seeing your update in my inbox today motivated me to finally create an account here, just for the chance that you might read this.

Stumbling upon A Short Hike years ago genuinely changed my life. It touched something deep in me, and I know I’m not alone. I shared it with every close friend I could, gamer or not. I’d gift them copies or lend out my Switch so they could feel what your game made me feel.

Reading your email was bittersweet. Your RPG project was, quite literally, the release I was most excited for. Still, knowing you’re continuing to create and explore new ideas fills me with joy. I’m so glad you're still making games.

I don’t want to sound like a cliché, but your intuitive approach to your art, and the sensitivity you bring to it, helped inspire me to begin my own creative journey as a writer. And if I ever end up working on a game one day, it’ll be because of you.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I don’t have a PC anymore, but I’ll find a way to emulate this on my Mac and play it later today.

— A fan from the other side of the world

This looks so incredible! I wish I had a windows OS right now.

Doesn’t it work with Wine? Haven’t got the time to test it yet (I hope to do so soon!), but from my experience Wine works incredibly.

Yes it worked fine on a steam deck

Can you tell me what Proton you used, I downloaded, added to steam as none steam and tried about 5 diff compatability levels cant get it to run.

Are you on Mac or Linux? Maybe I can compile a build.

The best port would be something akin to a nsp file (switch ROM), so it could run on all platforms.

mac would be much appreciated

I'm on Mac. Haven't tried it with Wine yet but if you did it would be so appreciated.

I uploaded a mac build!

Let’s gooooo thank you so much I can’t wait to play it!

NGL this almost feels like a complete game by itself.

(+7)

Thanks! Kinda why I wanted to put it out, I think there's a decent chunk of game to play

It looks amazing! I'm really impressed by your work. I'm trying to achieve a similar art style — but with less detail, haha. Nice work!

Thanks so much! Good luck with your project :D
